Tim Schwartz’s work dances across the divide of hot-poured lead and algorithmic tendencies. He infuses the traditions of bookmaking and printmaking with pressing concerns around digital anonymity, cryptography, our online personas, and exploring the possibilities inherent in both new and old technologies.
Tim Schwartz focuses on data privacy and digital information as an artist, activist, and technologist. He is the author of ‘A Public Service: Whistleblowing, Disclosure, & Anonymity‘ published by OR Books and makes prints, sculptures, and books in his studio in Los Angeles.
“For this Artist News Network takeover, I wanted to focus on how I get my news – what makes my personal algorithm unique. I’m sad to say that my news habits over the years have evolved/devolved into a daily visit to the New York Times (sometimes the LA Times) and the rest comes in through my mailbox. I’ve tried various aggregators and apps, but it’s just not my style. So this week I’ll be featuring news that comes in via email, though not all of it is strictly “news” for all, some is just for me. I have a number of notifications that I get emails about, sometimes this is the most important news I get in a day.

GIJN’s Guide to Undercover Reporting
I just got this in my email yesterday, what an amazingly detailed guide to think about going undercover as a journalist. I thought it complimented the spy stuff. Also the Global Investigative Journalism Network is an amazing organization, great talks and articles all the time. A good way to keep on top of how these smart journalists are doing their work. The Brazilian Candidate: The Studious Cover Identity of an Alleged Russian Spy
This was my favorite article this year. Real-life spy shit. During the pandemic my partner and I watched the french show “The Bureau,” – it was AMAZING. This article gave me a glimpse into the reality of it. To top it all off, I love reading Bellingcat’s research and articles.

Post-quantum encryption contender is taken out by single-core PC and 1 hour
My favorite monthly roundup is Crypto-Gram by Bruce Schneier (www.schneier.com – link in bio). Unfortunately this won’t come out while I’m guest curating, so here are recent articles that I found out about through Bruce. He is on the forefront of digital security and has written a number of great books, my personal favorite is ‘Data and Goliath’ which is what I recommend to anyone trying to understand how much individuals are tracked by their data.
This breaking of a new “unbreakable” algorithm highlights how difficult safe communication is now and how difficult it will continue to be in the future. Since the early 1990s we’ve all relied on a few standards for secure communication, most notably PGP encryption, while it is still working now, it’s tough to say how well it will work in the future when quantum computers have become a standard.

He is on the forefront of digital security and has written a number of great books, my personal favorite is ‘Data and Goliath’ which is what I recommend to anyone trying to understand how much individuals are tracked by their data.
In early July four new crypto-algorithms were announced to be standards for the future that would be resistant to quantum computers. Well, less than a month later one of the four was broken by a single PC computer. Welcome to the future.

This is an amazing report by the Georgetown Law Center for Privacy and Technology detailing how far ICE has gone in actively surveilling individuals within the US.

Day 566: ‘The Senate is making history.
What The Fuck Just Happened Today is in my view, the best daily round up of American politics. It is succinct and I usually have the screen reader on my iPhone read it to me in a robot voice while I drive home from my art studio. It was started by Matt Kiser when Trump was elected and he hasn’t stopped since. The beauty of a daily politics roundup is that I can stay informed without getting obsessed. This helped a lot during the pandemic and Trump’s reign. Staying mildly detached helped my overall mental health.

Wachete notification (All ads in California | Briar Press | A letterpress community)
I use Wachete on a number of websites to track when things are updated and be notified about them. It is an amazing tool and is great for things that don’t have regular news updates. I use it to track the California classifieds section of www.briarpress.org where other letterpress nerds list equipment for free or sale. Gotta be on top of those deals.
