Rainer Torrado Amo

Rainer Torrado Amo is a Spanish artist currently based in Rome. His myriad practices as an architect, fashion photographer, and visual artist have taken him from his hometown of Madrid to Paris, and on to Hong Kong, where he documented the visual vernacular of the streets and the city’s queer underground scene. From a young age his passions have also been fuelled by his interest in the news media and current events. His exhibition in Paris, This Too Shall Pass, will see him present his photography alongside his own exploration of recent news stories, many of which are shown here.

“I was 12 when I spoke to my classmates about the ebola virus. The assignment was “give a talk on the topic of your choice” Born in Madrid in 198x, today I see clearly that I’ve been interested in social and ecological collapse from an early age.

Back in the 90s, the ebola virus was not a hot topic (see what i did there?) Yes, there were books, and occasional outbreaks would make the news – inadvertently to most. And yet, all my stories, like that precocious talk on deadly hemorrhagic fevers to fellow preteens, are possible thanks to my endless hours dedicated to reading books, news and whatnot.

What exactly is whatnot?

You can call me a reader, architect, photographer, artist: My name is Rainer and it’s with great pleasure that I’m going to curate this feed for the next few days. My installation THIS TOO SHALL PASS, opens on Thursday 20 May (2021) in Paris.”

Rainer Torrado Amo has lived, studied, and worked in Madrid, Paris, Hong Kong, and Rome.
